It was with profound sadness that the Furness Rovers family learned of the passing of Derek Stevens on Christmas Eve, just three days prior to his 82nd birthday.

Derek was the visionary and "prime mover" behind the formation of SDO (Ship Drawing Office) FC in 1971—the club we proudly know today as Furness Rovers FC. What began as Derek’s initiative to enter two teams into the annual Catholic 5-a-side tournament at Chetwynde School soon evolved into a thriving office team. From storied friendlies against the Argentinian Naval staff to our official Barrow Sunday League debut against Brewery Inn in the 1972-73 season, Derek was the driving force every step of the way.

When Derek laid those foundations 54 years ago, he could scarcely have imagined the scale of the legacy he was creating. Today, Furness Rovers provides a home for football across every age group, from our Under 6s to our Senior squads.

We owe our existence to Derek’s passion and dedication. The thoughts and deepest sympathies of everyone at Furness Rovers FC are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
